Puhumme mielentiloista, mikä antaa ymmärtää, että tila on sidoksissa mieleemme ja muistiimme. Leros on jättänyt minuuteeni vahvan muistijäljen. Se ei ole enää vain syrjäinen saari vaan paikka täynnä merkityksiä. Japanilaisilla on termi furusato kuvaamaan synnyinpaikkaa sekä kotikaupunkia. Tämä paikka kasvattaa meistä sellaisia kuin nykyisin olemme. Se on paikka, jonne palaamme katsomaan sukulaisia ja jonne olemme juurtuneet. Meillä voi olla myös toinen furusato, paikka, jonne sydämemme kotiutuu. Leros on minulle yksi tällainen sydämen maja. Matkailijan katseeni säilyi muukalaisen katseena vielä matkani jälkeen. Liike on muutosta eikä se jätä maailmaa entiselleen. Kerran ulkomailla asuttuaan joutunee kai olotilaan, jossa aina kaipaa jonnekin. Mieli muodostaa kodeiksi koettuihin paikkoihin kaipuun siteitä – merkityksellisiä mielentiloja.

We speak about states of mind, which implies that space is linked to our minds and memories. Leros has left a strong impression on my selfhood. It is no longer just a remote island but rather a place full of meanings. The Japanese have the term furusato to describe one’s place of birth and hometown. This place raises us to become what we are today. It is the place where we return to see our relatives and where we have put down roots. We may also have a second furusato, a place where our heart makes its home. Leros is for me one such abode of the heart. Once you have lived abroad you always find yourself missing somewhere else. The mind forms bonds of longing for places perceived as home – for meaningful states of mind.

Kreikan Leroksen saarella sijaitseva Villa Kolkis oli kirjailija Göran Schildtin (1917-2009) turvasatama, jonka kautta hän lähestyi Egeanmeren ympäristöä ja kulttuuria. Kaksikymmentä vuotta myöhemmin arkkitehti Iris Andersson (s.1990) sai kulkea samoissa huoneissa ja maisemissa. Tämä kirja on eläytyvä ja moniaistinen kuvaus talosta, joka inspiroi kirjailijaa. Oppaana ja talon hengettärenä Christine Schildt avaa yhteisen kodin taustoja. Talosta muodostuu hengittävä harso ystävyydelle, rakkaudelle ja turvalle. Se on jälki menneisyydestä ja kehys tulevaisuudelle. Mieli on erottamaton osa paikkaa – Saari on kirjailijassa ja kirjailija saaressa.

The author Göran Schildt (1917-2009) regarded Villa Kolkis, his home on the Greek island of Leros, as a safe haven from where he could acquaint himself with the Aegean Sea and its culture. Ten years later, architect Iris Andersson (b. 1990) was able to walk in the same rooms and landscapes. In the Author's House is an empathic and multisensory depiction of the house that inspired the author. As both a guide and soul of the house, Christine Schildt provides the context to their shared home. The house becomes a living mantle for friendship, love and safety. It is a vestige of the past and a frame for the future. The mind is an inseparable part of the place – the island is in the author and the author is in the island.
